Shofu-ji is a temple of Honmon-Butsuryu-syu or HBS, a sect of Buddhism, where people learn the religious faith of the Lotus Sutra preached by Saint Nichiren.
Honmon-Butsuryu-syu is a religion of learning the ultimate religious belief in the latter part of the Lotus sutra through the teaching of Saint Nichiren(1222-1282). Although the sutra was interpreted in different ways in a long history, Saint Nichiryu (1385-1464) during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and Saint Nissen(1817-1890) during the end of the Edo period (1603-1868) revised and corrected it to return to the original teaching of the Lotus sutra. And people today have learned the teaching thanks to the great efforts of the two saints.
Now, HBS has about 300 temples nationwide and 24 ashrams called dojo overseas led by the head temple, Yuusei-ji temple, in Kyoto. And believers chant sutras every day praying for world permanent peace and happiness for others and themselves.
In Shofu-ji temple, we have seasonal Buddhism services as annual events: for New Year, the equinoctial week in spring and autumn, the Bon week, the New Year’s Eve. In addition, special Buddhism services called Oesiki are held to honor Saint Nichiren, Saint Nichiryu, and Saint Nissen as part of annual important events at temple.
And every month we hold a lecture at a believer’s home as ashram or dojo in each area in order to learn the teaching of the sutra from a priest of our temple.
As part of welfare activities, we have continued to support patients suffering from Hanssen’s disease since 1955.We visit two welfare facilities regularly: Oshima-seisyouen in Kagawa Prefecture and Nagashima-aisyouen in Okayama Prefecture .
In addition, we have also supported a disaster area hit by the Great Earthquake in Northeastern part of Japan. As part of the support, we have a relationship with producers in Ishinomaki City in Iwate Prefecture to hold a fair dealing with their local food such as seaweed and rice three times a year.
And we provide a rythmique class as child-care support through music as part of activities for our local community. The class has two courses for babies and kids. In addition, we enjoy haiku in a Haiku Society "Syoufu-kukai" every month.
We establish a charnel called “Syouryou-kaku” as a safe and peaceful ultimate place for believers inside the premises. This charnel is designed brightly so that their bereaved families can visit at any time. And this place has always been kept clean thanks to volunteer work by believers. In the charnel, we offer the Nichiren prayer every day. This charnel also contains cremains without relatives. And unlike general charnels, the charnel “Syouyou-kaku” basically does not enshrine all cremains together. That’s because we respect their will that they want to fall into eternal slumber here in Shofu-ji temple. And there is also another hall called “Syoukyuan” for believers to hold a funeral or a Buddhist memorial service and we support their Hoon-gyou or an act for expressing the feeling of gratitude to their ancestors.
